How to Know When You Are Holding Yourself Back

Life is about growth.

When we are children, we can literally measure our growth with a yard stick.  We can see our progress by marking how tall we are… in the kitchen doorway.  Growth is obvious and everywhere and something we are so proud of.  Then, when we become adults, things get a little tricky.  We have to consciously take steps and be aware of our growth to feel it.

But when we aren’t growing, when we aren’t moving forward and reaching those marks, we feel off.  We may feel anxious or sad or just plain bored.  We most likely don’t feel happy.

But there is a simple solution.

The solution is to set goals for yourself.  Lay it out.  What do you want to have, do and be in your life?  Do you want to look back on your life and wish that you had done things differently?  What does different look like?  Is different better?  Why? We have to think about what we want out of every aspect of our life and then make our dreams happen because if we don’t, we aren’t living.  We aren’t growing.

By clearly laying out your goals and taking consistent steps (big or small) toward living the life that you want to live, you will be moving forward (aka: growing).  Anything that doesn’t move you in the direction of the life that you really want to live is a distraction.  Distractions keep us from being who we want to be, having the things we want to have and doing the things we truly want to have.  If we want to be happy, we have to be very clear about what goals we want to achieve in our lives and WHY.

I will cover how to spot distractions in my next post, but for now, please share your thoughts on steps we can take to grow in the comments.  Thanks so much!

    Britt,

I think you hit the nail on the head! The best way to grow your business is to set goals for yourself. I find that I can get *really* distracted if I do not have a solid list of ‘to-do’ items in front of me. I will absolutely plow through that list if it is written down, but if it isn’t — I’m lost!

Can’t wait to see how you spot distractions! lol — Tara

    Hey Tara!

Yes, everyone gets distracted! The key is to be aware of this and consistently check in to see what your distractions are.

Here’s a little teaser… in order to spot a distraction, you have to be very clear about what your personal, professional and family goals are. Once you have clarity on those goals and what you need to do to get there… you will be able to spot the distractions a mile away! ;)
